Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail, nail bed or both, which affects about 10% of the population.

Risk factors are tinea pedis, nail dystrophy, older age and circulatory disorders.

Toenails are affected 10 times more often than fingernails. About 60–80% of cases are caused by dermatophytes (e.g. Trichophyton rubrum), and most of the remaining cases by non-dermatophyte molds (e.g. Aspergillus, Scopulariopsis, Fusarium).

Nd:YAG laser therapy enables fast, safe and effective treatment of onychomycosis.

The laser beam penetrates the affected tissue of the matrix, nail bed and the surrounding skin and, through thermal action, eliminates the fungi. The treatment is performed without oral antifungal medications. It is necessary to perform 4 treatments with one week intervals.
